Colour 101: Neutrals

The question I get asked most frequently is "Do these colours match?" I myself often struggle with matching dilemmas and am always worried about a fate worse than death - clashing colours. So what are the colour combinations that flatter, and what are the combinations to avoid? I've done the homework so you don't have to!

Lesson one: Neutrals

Most people know that black and white go with any colour. But did you know that pairing with black makes a colour seem brighter, while pairing with white makes a colour seem darker and richer? So while black and white work equally well as neutrals, you may pick one over the other depending on what mood you're after, or what the season is. After all, it can look pretty silly wearing black with already deep colours like navy or plum on a hot summer day (been there, done that, and it ain't pretty).

Other famous neutrals include brown, grey, and cream. And yes, you can mix neutrals! Black and brown happens to be one of my favorite colour combinations... So go ahead and pair brown boots with your black pants!

Lesser known neutrals include blue jeans, tweed, and khaki (ok, so I couldn't find any real khaki pants, just quasi-khaki pants...it's the middle of winter, give me a break!)
